I’m Chinese Singapore. I have two close Indian friends I would trust with my life – one who was born, raised and lives in Calcutta. One is an “NRI” – this is her own description and she takes pains to make the distinction. She was born in west Africa, spent her teens in Singapore and now works and lives in Gujarat, India.
My unofficial Godparents are Tamil Singaporean. Suffice to say, Indian nationals are not a big hit with them either.
I have discarded quite a number of Indian ex-friends because of this habitual laxity with time management, amongst other traits. It’s the height of rudeness and ill-upbringing not to call if you’re going to be late or when you’ve explicitly accepted an invite to a party, then not call nor even text to say you’re not coming.
It was Evelyn Waugh who said “punctuality is a virtue of the bored”. But these are coddled, wealthy, bored, gossipy, suburban housewives whose lives consist of endless parties trying to outdo one another. I’m a working parent, well-educated and well-travelled. God help me if I had to endure even a FRACTION of the petty mawkishness of THEIR simplistic lives. I can have compassion for their situation up to a point. I just don’t understand how anyone can live in an unaerated fish-bowl like that.
I’ve never met a nationality more arrogant, unreliable, fake, pretentious, grandiose, boorish, attention-seeking, passive-aggressive – the nationality as a whole has all the classic symptoms of Narcissistic Personality Disorder.
